Watch Coldplay Cover "Nothing Compares 2 U" with James Corden

The band and the late-night host unleashed a stirring rendition of the Prince classic.

It turns out that Coldplay and James Corden go back further than the time Chris Martin appeared on "Carpool Karaoke." in fact, Martin once asked Corden to join the band. At least, that's a joke he told on stage during the British rockers' Sunday night concert in Los Angeles, when Martin invited Corden on stage to assist with a cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U."

"What people don't know is that there was another guy that we all met and we all thought was the most talented member, and he was so good that if he had been in our band forever, we'd be the best band you ever knew. But instead he chose to forge his own path," said Martin by way of an introduction. "But I'm very pleased to tell you that – in honor of Prince tonight, because we wanna honor Prince – we managed to convince our missing and best member to come back into the band. You may know him from things like 'Carpool Karaoke' and that kind of shit, but we know him as the guy who turned down being in a band with us."

"So this is an idea that Chris said to me, he said 'I think you should come sing this at the Rose Bowl.' I'll be honest: I didn't know how big it was when I said yes," responded Corden. The new, slightly larger version of Coldplay then launch into the Purple One's classic, with Corden and Martin taking turns on lead vocals. Before it's all over, Martin also reminds the crowd that's it's James' birthday, so they serenade him with 80,000 fans and give him a cake. It's teary eyed for all the right reasons.
