If teasing their fans constantly with new music hasn’t been enough for The xx, they’re taking the buzz to the historic Saturday Night Live stage with host Kristen Wiig this weekend.
In the promo, the the trio stands awkwardly as host Kristen Wiig and cast member Aidy Bryant crack jokes back and forth, barely even acknowledged until the second half of the video when they are called “funky” and whole-heartedly deny the claim. You can watch the scenario below.
Maybe it’s the nerves from being on stage next to Kristen Wiig, or maybe we’re missing out on something absolutely hilarious someone said before they shot the promos--whatever it is that has Romy xx looking like she’s holding her breath to not laugh — we kind of want more of it this Saturday. Only time will tell if we will get an awkwardly silent skit from the band and Ms. Wiig. Something simple would do… like dressing up the British band as members of the Queen’s Guard so we can see if their resolve will hold for their country’s leader or if they’ll laugh their loyalty away.
While The xx have been busy this year recording their long-awaited third album I See You—set to be released January 13—they’ve also spent a good amount of time tormenting fans with short song clips, no news, and random appearances from Jamie xx at live shows around the world. They released their newest song and first album single “On Hold” last week after days of teasing clips from it. The song already has over 5 million streams on Spotify and has reminded the general public of why we love The xx so much - despite their odd nature in this video.
We posted last week about their live performance on Annie Mac’s BBC1, but this week The xx have managed to top all other announcements in this seriously awkward SNL promo. Be sure to watch all the shenanigans this Saturday night on NBC.
