Shawn Mendes has always cited John Mayer as one of his inspirations, and on Monday night, he got to make musical magic with his hero. Mayer, who is only a few days into his The Search For Everything Tour, invited the 18-year-old viral sensation onstage at the Toronto concert to mash up two of their hits.
The crowd went wild for their fellow Canadian, who started strumming out 2016's "Mercy," off his Illuminate album. They went even more nuts when Mayer joined in, harmonizing along with the guitar prodigy. Then, the "Mercy" jam turned into Mayer's "In Your Atmosphere," a song off this 2008 live album Where the Light Is.
Last year, Mendes gushed to Seventeen about how Mayer inspired his sophomore album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts: "It's a mix of pop and like a John Mayer-and-Ed Sheeran acoustic feel all in one," he told the mag about his new music. "My friends and I think John Mayer is this music god who we've grown up learning from."
Watch the two duet onstage, and then check out tickets to Mayer's The Search For Everything Tour for more guitar goodness.
Mayer commemorated the special live-music moment with an Instagram post, calling Mendes "dynamite" (along with the hashtag #bringingbacktheworddynamite.)
Mendes is also on the road, playing his Illuminate World Tour until August. Catch those tickets here.
