In September 2016 Pixie Lott, Luan Santana and Yemi Alade landed in Rio de Janeiro, and headed for the Santa Marta community.
The three musicians were in Rio to unite on an exciting new project with Shell — launching the #makethefuture campaign by supercharging a local community with displays of bright energy ideas.
In Santa Marta, these artists had the chance to experience some of these innovative ideas first hand and meet some members of the community benefiting from them.
Among the exciting developments the artists saw were new installations of solar panels around the common areas of Santa Marta. Insolar, a Rio based startup, will continue to roll out these installations throughout the community in the months to come, helping give residents more reliable access to sustainable electricity.
Pixie Lott joined a Santa Marta crowd to redefine the phrase ‘electric dance moves’ with the help of a special dance floor made of Pavegen tiles, which harness the energy of footsteps to generate electricity. The tiles were set up in Cantao Square to convert Pixie’s Samba moves into kinetic energy.
Yemi Alade, Pixie Lott and Luan Santana had the chance to experiment with another technology harnessing an often-overlooked resource. GravityLight uses the weight of a bag filled with rocks to illuminate homes, helping provide a solution for those who live off the grid in developing countries and currently rely on less efficient kerosene lamps.
Santa Marta had all eyes on it as the sun went down, when it hosted live performances by these three global superstars. The live performances ramped up to the premiere of an exclusive new music video — a new version of American Authors’ “Best Day of My Life” featuring even more global celebrities. In the video, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Aoki, and Tan WeiWei join Pixie, Luan and Yemi in showcasing bright energy innovations that Shell is helping bring to global communities in need of cleaner energy and more of it.
