DJ performance generally requires the artist to be positioned behind a deck, barely visible to the audience. To create a more engaging show, productions now employ combinations of digital light, fine pixel LED walls, projection mapping and other visual technologies to create an all-around sensory experience. Eric Prydz, a Swedish dance music star, is staying at the forefront of this trend with his concert series EPIC—an acronym for ‘Eric Prydz In Concert’.
In EPIC 3.0, the third year of the series, Prydz premiered the world's largest and brightest indoor hologram to date, utilizing Holotronica’s state-of-the-art Holo-Gauze technology. For EPIC 4.0, his production team created a three dimensional cube-like display and a near-transparent LED wall that reached the outer edges of his concert venues. The LED surfaces displayed images and patterns on what looked like thin air. What’s most impressive about these audiovisual spectacles is that they are all performed live, meaning there is an entire team of VJs and lighting technicians working in unison with Prydz’s DJ set.

Now, to preview the potential of EPIC 5.0 (coming next year), here’s what Prydz’s collaborators have done in the past:
Symmetry Labs went to Burning Man with an installation of “playable lights” called “Sugar Cubes.” The result was a mesmerizing display of LED patterns on what looked like stacked transparent cubes.
V Squared Labs pioneered an interactive motion-driven visual synthesizer: The technology senses the movement of each artist on stage and projects these movements onto the LED panels behind them, mimicking their movements in a display of lights and colors. Watch it in action with Big Grams, the collaborative project between Phantogram and Big Boi right here.
It’s no secret that touring is where artists make most of their money these days, so great live production and staging is a must in order to draw large audiences. With many players and competition at its peak, the next years will push creators and tech geniuses to come up with the next level of imaginative spectacle with which to impress us. Bring it on!
