We’d call it the Coachella of the East Coast, but let’s be real here, Governor’s Ball has always held its own as a music festival. And this year, the New York City-based fest fully demonstrates their knack for curating amazing lineups - including Chance The Rapper - good times and diverse artistry. From June 4 to June 6, NYC's Randall's Island Park will be taken over for the sixth year in a row (their inaugural show was on Governer's Island--hence the name).
From our favorite human/artist/Christmas Caroler Chance the Rapper to Phantogram to Saint Motel, Governor’s Ball has taken all popular artists in all genres into account when putting together this year's roster.
Last year, Governor’s Ball brought in over 50,000 attendees each day, before the last day was rained out. We’re kind of hoping this year the weather will be nice, or we hope they perform like rock gods amidst the thunder and lightning (safely, of course). Or we can just count on Chance to be very Chance-y and come out singing Christmas Carols acapella. Bring President Obama. We'll pretend it's December. Maybe throw some Childish Gambino/Donald Glover standup in there. We'd go just to see him say "Mufasa."
Alt-metal mainstays Tool are returning to NYC after a decade away, and they promise it won't be a measly 30-minute festival set. Since their headlining appearance coincides with their long-awaited album, the LA natives have committed to a "full-length set with complete tour production".
Gov Ball organizers also heard 2016's plea for more females performers at festivals because amongst the acts that are usually, heavily male dominated there are a plethora of fierce femmes on the bill, including: Lorde, Phantogram, Banks, Charli XCX, Kehlani and more. We're stoked for the girl power.
You can check out the full lineup below, and be prepared to drain your bank account this Friday, January 6 as tickets go on sale. And don't forget, Chance The Rapper will be there, so happiness is guaranteed.
