As music, film, food and beverage enthusiasts gather for Fest Forums, an entertainment festival industry conference, recording artist Jack Johnson and his wife Kim will receive an award for their work promoting sustainability at music events this year.
Born in Hawaii, Jack Johnson grew up surfing and was a pro for a while before the songwriting took over and he switched his focus to music. As he became more popular and started doing fundraisers for local organizations, the “Better Together” singer realized he had a calling to become engaged in environmental advocacy. In an interview with Impacting Our Future about this moment of clarity, he said, “That feeling of using music to create positive change in a community was so fulfilling. It became a driving force behind my music career.”
Between touring with low-impact and eco-friendly requirements to teaching students about sustainability, the Johnsons live and breathe a lifestyle of environmental awareness. They share their passion for sustainability through two non-profit organizations: Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation and All At Once. These organizations work to support plastic-free initiatives and sustainable local food systems, while also helping other organizations focused on environmental issues, art and music education.
In addition to accepting the Fest Forums award for their work in making music events greener, the Johnsons will be taking part in a roundtable discussion aimed at creating more awareness of environmental issues within the festival community. They have said that they view Fest Forums as a perfect opportunity to discuss ways to take action and to inspire others to help make big festival events more eco- friendly.
Fest Forums is an annual conference that provides an opportunity to hear experts—including representatives from Vans Warped Tour and Tribeca—talk about manhy different festival industries. A major event during the conference is the organization’s “Best of the Fests” Award Ceremony, where notable people receive awards for their efforts in promoting sustainability, innovation and charitable work. This year’s Fest Forums will take place on November 19-21 at Santa Barbara’s Fess Parker Hotel.
